Office Air Conditioning

Living in Queensland, it’s terribly hot and humid in the summer time. My office faces east, but it being hot hasn’t really been much of an issue in the past, working from an office on weekdays and cranking up the ceiling fan if I happened to be at home on a summer weekend.

Owing to the awesomeness of my new job however, I’ll be working from home more regularly, and remote work means video conferences sometimes. This means wearing (at least) a shirt 😀 It’s time for air conditioning to save everyone from the effects of summer heat.

It’s not a large room, but the window does face over my patio roof, so previous aircon install discussions have negated the possibility of a split system due to cost and access issues. Window-mount units have worked well enough for me in the past, and they’re a cheap and non-permanent solution in case I move or change my use of the room.

After shopping around a bit, I found the Kelvinator KWH20CRE cooling-only 2.0kw unit. I don’t need heating, because that’s what clothes are for, but I did want a remote control so that I can tie it into my home automation system. Being able to pre-cool the house while I’m on the way home or remotely turn it off when I’m forgetful is a big plus to me.

My normal go-to for these kinds of things is Appliances Online but after a little searching, I found a local cash-and-carry place called Airconditioning Warehouse Sales. They were local, $130 cheaper and I could get it that day. What could be better?

Installation isn’t trivial however, it seems to be a very common thing to be able to buy a window-mount aircon bracket in the states (the Wirecutter event has a “best-pick” review) but in Australia, we’ve all moved to split systems, so it’s a custom job for me.
