Berlin Wandering Adventure

caught the underground from Stadtmitte to Rosa-Luxemburg Platz station, walked to Luiban. it’s a cute little store, I grabbed a few things I can’t get easily at home

walked to alexanderplatz, big open place

walked to teacher’s house, curious mexican-style mural on the side. largest european work of art by area.

The mosaic frieze Our Life is Europe’s largest work of art, measured by area. Comprising approx. 800,000 individual tiles, it extends around two storeys of the Haus des Lehrers, which is located on Alexanderplatz and was designed by Hermann Henselmann. Walter Womacka designed and produced the monumental frieze, measuring seven metres in height and 125 metres in length, between 1962 and 1964 in cooperation with other artists.

“stop wars” building across the way was pretty spectacular

the Berliner Fernsehturm (radio tower) is pretty big and is always on the skyline in this area.

the city hall - Rotes Rathaus is pretty neat - big red building.

neptune’s fountain - Neptunbrunnen

St. Mary’s Church

walked to the Berlin Cathedral - Berliner Dom - spectacular place to visit, the dome inside is amazing, the facility is huge. wandered up to the museum which was a little disappointing - made up by walking through the crypt to see the royal tombs.

saw the lustgarten - a little empty this time of year. sadly the art museum was closed today.

Neue Wache was imposing and austere, exactly what you’d expect.

bebelplatz was full of people, sadly :(

had lunch at Nante-Eck - nice food.

sausage plate for me, RMB had the seafood soup - there wasn’t much seafood injured in this soup

we had some cheesy pizza thing - Wat jeder kennt (what everyone knows) - with creme frâiche, bacon and onions 8,50 €

lashings of beer and gin & tonic for RMB.

the Brandenburg Gate is an imposing structure as you’d expect.

Pariser Platz is closed at the moment because of the G20 Compact with Africa event going on this week. We still got some good photos, just didn’t get to wander around the area as much as we’d like.

the reichstag building is what you’d expect, a big place. we couldn’t go in because you need to apply in advance, and it was too late.

the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is intense. deep and muffled sound, rolling ground and the solid big black stones. amazing.

it’s important to remember the shaming of thoughtless people done by another thoughtless person when attending the site - interestingly I found a single “rules of the site” plaque on the pavement, visible only because I was looking for it.
