2018 10 25 Riga

woke up, terrible case of the shits. not my usual ones where I’m grumpy - the real ones.

dinner at the hotel, was pretty good

Baltu Rotas - amazing jewellery place

st peter’s church, lovely quiet place

house of the blackheads

baltic way footprints

The Freedom monument - Brīvības piemineklis - watched the changing of the guard

national history museum of latvia

lots of things, great presentations of historical artifacts

prom no krievijas imperijas (away from the Russian empire!)

saw the laima clock

walked past the latvian war museum - sadly didn’t have enough time to go through. the powder tower was cool to see

St. Jacob Catholic Cathedral of Riga, lovely to see outside, some cool animal sculptures

the place is huge inside

cloisters were cloistered, hilarious storage place for a load of stuff

cannons and stuff

We had lunch at XL Pelmeņi, a self-service meal house kind of place. Very different from anything we get at home - but it was super cheap and tasty. 11.90EUR for two bowls of dumplings, two plates of soup (solyanka with sausage and other stuff, mushroom and potato stew) and two glasses of coke. Amazing value.

walked to the three brothers. ticked that box.

walked past the riga castle, saw the tower.

amazing local textile and clothing history place - Tautas terpu centrs Sena klets

back to the hotel

dinner in the hotel restaurant

solyanka was tasty, if a bit oily - lots of meat and vegetables - big serve RMB had “Garlic rye breads with cheese sauce” - fried rye bread with garlic smooshed on it, and cheese whizz

“Beef tenderloin with grilled tomatoes, butter baked potatoes and red wine-rosemary sauce” was what I ordered - I got the beef and the tomatoes, but also some oven baked potato wedges and heinz bbq sauce. It was filling.

“Fettucini with olives and prawns” was weird, but the closest thing to the menu on the website. Robyn got it, and the prawns weren’t from a can, that was the bonus I guess?
