Iceland Day 7 - North Coast

Woke up in the Skutustadir Guesthouse, warm and dry. Outside everything was spectacularly snow-covered.

Breakfast was delicious, with locally grown and caught food, including some home made sheep pate!

Across the road, I ran up the side of one of the Skútustaðagígar psuedo craters, caused by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over the wetlands.

The Goðafoss (Icelandic: “waterfall of the gods”) are quite spectacular.

In the year 999 or 1000 the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. According to a modern myth, it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, Þorgeir threw his statues of the false idols (Norse gods) into the waterfall.

Akureyri

hotdog with everything - onions, remolade, ketchup and mustard - the sausage tasted like a normal one, was just a cheap hotdog.

epic tunnels

lots of snow again

Dalvik, a cute little fishing village on the way to Trollaskagi. It turns out, namesake of the old Android Virtual Machine. Curious.

3.4km tunnel Múlagöng from Dalvik to Ólafsfjörð, had a lot of graffiti in it.

The longest continuous tunnel in Iceland, Héðinsfjarðargöng. It really just goes and goes and goes. Thankfully it has two lanes, Múlagöng does not and it’s moderately terrifying to wait for someone to come the other way, then dive into a waiting bay while they pass.

Lunch was fun - in a spot between the two Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnels, there’s a little fjord called Héðinsfjörður that looks out over the lake Héðinsfjarðarvatn. There’s a couple of picnic benches and a parking lot, and an amazing view. What more could you need?

Lunch by dashboard light…

While trying to get a good photo of the church in Siglufjörður, I noticed this boat peeking between some shipping containers and a shed.

Trollaskagi, thought it was a single lookout - turns out it’s an amazing peninsula region with a lighthouse and twisting turning roads of excitement and views.
