A Walk Along a Beach

JuNuki

A lady pointed and cackled the other day and the only word I recognised was “grandmother” because I was a little stooped over and walking like her… pretty sure she’d run over and help me cross the street today 😂

Hike done. Everything starting from my hips down is angry. Wept a bit at the end, pretty sure there’s a bit more to come when I finally can curl up in the shower.

First day in Nagoya

Asking about breakfast of the hotelier…

me: Is it western style or Japanese? them: Cheap.

Well, that’s a sign.

Gives me two pages of other options for breakfast and is confused when I still just want the hotel breakfast because I can’t deal with hunting and deciding at this time of day.

Ok, it wasn’t too bad in the end. Quite a few options, some good fish and miso pork, rice wasn’t dry. Toast was… horrible.

Heading back to Nagoya

Checking out of the hotel and off to Nachi Falls

Train from Atawa to Shingu was simple as usual, grabbed breakfast at the Lawson across the street.

Finally had my first Japan Konbini egg sandwich. It’s OK? Maybe the 7/11 ones are better, but give me hot chicken or 🍙 onigiri 🍙 any day!

Shingu to Kii-Katsuura, once I managed to get the right ticket (yes, you need to reserve tickets, even if the system will happily let you buy otherwise.)

Sea day

Yep, four days was a sensible limit. Time to chill, do some much needed washing and recover a bit.

Amazake, basically a non-alcoholic side quest of saké production leftovers. Slightly sweetish and kinda syrupy.

Uh… not much today!

If I Take a Step Wrong I Die

Today I wasn’t going to push myself. I’m not good at that. I climbed even more in total today - it wasn’t as fraught the entire time as the paths were less horrifying, but … I was definitely pushing myself to the limit of recovery / endurance.

Grabbed what turned out to be not enough breakfast and some food for the day, knowing I really wasn’t going to see another spot for it until I caught a train to civilisation. I had some energy gel things and a block of dark chocolate floating around in my bag so I figured that’d be enough.

Ise-Ji Day Three

The entire town of Owase is a tiny fortress due to the fact it’s at sea level, along the road closest to the ocean, there’s a five foot tall wall, and where gaps need to be (for roads or driveways) there are automated tsunami walls. My hotel is a refuge/evacuation centre, which explains why the front doors are inch thick steel and the glass all has safety wire in it.

Ise-Ji Day Two

Leaving Misedani this morning

As with Hakone, city/town/region names continue to be confusing. I’m in Odai right now, but the station and lots of local things are called Misedani. Odai is… a strange shape 😂

Not a bad day all round, especially compared to yesterday’s shenanigans!

Started out a little chill/late, ate the cup noodle that’d been floating around in my bag and grabbed some more snacks from the supermarket next to the hotel. Pro tip, don’t grab barley tea when you mean to get water, ew. Ew. EWWWW.

Off To Ise Jingu, The Walk Begins

Breakfast options were solid in the buffet, passed on having natto flavour in my beard for the second day running. No curry? No morning. Nagoya gets me.

JR runs… infrequently on a Sunday public holiday it seems, so I had to hoof it to grab the Kintetsu Limited Express to Isuzugawa ekimae. Easy, right? Well, kinda. I didn’t know I had to buy a seat-allocated ticket at the station, else I’d have pre-bought it, and the first train was out of seats, so I had to wait until 08:50 to get going.

Less Onsen, More Weather

Today was Hakone -> Tokyo (Haneda) -> Nagoya with some fun in between. I had to drop RMB and the hire car off, then head to Nagoya, but I figured since the Tokyo International Pen Show was on, and I’m not likely to get a chance again, I’d check it out.

Anamori-inari station to Otorii station because got on the wrong express 😂

Paying for ticket fail, wouldn’t take my cards online … also had to buy a three day pass because I forgot to buy a single in time. I took up the option of paying via the machine in a local Lawson Konbini instead, which was fun. You put in your details, it gives you a barcode, then you go and pay (cash only!) at the Konbini register, where they print out more receipts and official tickets from a machine.
